Irish Setter - Red Setter

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN Ireland.

MOST SUITED AS Field sports dog and family pet.

SIZE
There are no standard dimensions. The shoulder-height is about 67cm (27 1/2in) but there are many much larger specimens.

COAT
The coat is relatively long and flat, with as few curls or waves as possible. The colour is rich chestnut without a trace of black. Markings such as white on the chest, throat, chin, or feet, or a small star on the forehead and a white blaze are all undesirable. There is also a red-white Irish Setter which has a predominantly white coat with red markings

CARE REQUIRED
The Irish Setter should be trimmed occasionally, removing excess hair. To show this breed will require considerably more grooming. For dogs kept solely as pets, the coat can be kept in condition between trims by clipping excess hair between the pads of the feet and underneath the ears. This latter point is necessary to prevent infections if the ear is not ventilated.

CHARACTER
These are lively, lovable, gentle, cheerful, and playful dogs that have a mind of their own, and bond with their family. Generally Irish Setters do not bark much.

TRAINING
The training of these dogs is generally not difficult. They are intelligent enough to understand quickly what is expected of them but they do have minds of their own, which calls for a handler who is both consistent and loving in his approach. It can be a good idea in some cases to attend a puppy training course.

SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR
Irish Setters are usually loving so that even unwanted visitors are enthusiastically welcomed. They do however let you know of the arrival of visitors. With children they are friendly and patient and mix harmoniously with other dogs. Mixing with other animals in the house will not be a problem if the young dog has got to know them early in its life.

EXERCISE
Because this breed needs plenty of exercise you will need to take it on regular long walks. Letting the dog run beside a cycle is an ideal form of exercise once the dog is fully grown. Some Irish Setters follow their nose when they come across what they consider to be an interesting scent. In such cases they tend to have a deaf ear to your calls. Teach the young dog that it must come to you when you order it to do so.
