History

The Jamthund is a large dog often referred to as the Swedish Elkhound. The name Jamthund is derived from Jamtland, a central region in northern Sweden. This breed is considered the national dog of Sweden. It was officially recognised as an individual breed in the mid 1900s.

This breed is part of the Elkhound group of dogs, which have a history that dates back several thousand years. The Jamthund was developed from Scandinavian Spitz dogs that were used for hunting large animals. It is immensely successful as a hunter of large animals such as bear or elk. It also has a history of being used for pulling sleds and as a service dog to Swedish law enforcement or military.

In addition to its presence in Sweden, similar breeds of Elkhounds can be found in nearby Denmark, Finland or Norway. All were originally bred for hunting and are still most commonly kept as working dogs, but they have also become well-known as companions.

Appearance

This breed bears a remarkable resemblance to a wolf and its appearance and demeanor can serve it well when hunting. It has a sturdy, hardy build and a very balanced appearance.

Its thick, dense double coat is usually gray or cream in colour with white markings throughout its body. Its coat is relatively low-maintenance, requiring only brushing to discourage tangling and to reduce shedding.

The Jamthund has large, wide-set ears that stand erect. It has dark, bold and attentive eyes that suggest great focus. Its thick tail curves upward and is carried on its back.

The average size of the Swedish Elkhound, or Jamthund, is 53-65 cm in height and 25-35 kg in weight. Females are visibly smaller in size and daintier in appearance than their male counterparts.

Temperament

Proper exercise is tantamount to the well-being of the Jamthund. It was bred for hunting and it has an intrinsic desire to roam, so small homes or yards will not suffice for this breed. It enjoys spending time outdoors and its origins make it well-suited for cool weather. Daily walks, runs or exercises are important, as is the ability to roam open land or a large, fenced-in yard. Without proper physical and mental stimulation, this breed is likely to develop behavioural issues or become destructive.

In addition to its passion for the outdoors, this breed is also extremely loyal to its owner or family and thoroughly enjoys human companionship. The Jamthund is an intelligent breed that learns new tricks or exercises quickly, always striving to please its owner. With proper socialisation and discipline, this breed gets along well with children and other dogs.

Health

This breed is naturally healthy and resilient, but it may be more prone than other breeds to hip problems such as dysplasia. It is otherwise highly prized for its hardiness.

A typical Jamthund lives to be 10-12 years of age.
